Andrés Iniesta Was Elected as the Best Player of the Tournament
Spain midfielder Andrés Iniesta has been elected as the Best Player of UEFA Euro 2012 by UEFA technical department.
Andrés Iniesta gave fabulous performance in the Euro Final against Italy. The Italy player Andrea Pirlo was also regarded as one of the outstanding players in Euro 2012. Even though no goal scored after one assist in six games of the final, what he contributed to Spain could not be measured by this.
UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh said, Pirlo was magnificent and obviously circumstances didn't help him in the final. Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernández and Iniesta were all superb. In the case of Xavi, he won the award last time, and he could easily have won the award again, but we felt that Iniesta deserved it. In many ways, he symbolised the tournament – the creative, indefatigable runner, with and without the ball. We felt that he epitomised a lot of what we saw.
UEFA technical department is led by Andy Roxburgh, with Fabio Capello (Italy), Jerzy Engel (Poland), Dušan Fitzel (Czech Republic), Gérard Houllier (France), Lars Lagerbäck (Sweden), György Mezey (Hungary) and Holger Osieck (Australia coach) included. Jean-Paul Brigger and Walter Gagg represent FIFA and Mordechai Shpigler is a bridge of UEFA's Development and Technical Assistance Committee.
The two departments have edited a 72-page technical report after researching of all 31 UEFA Euro games which is to be published in English, German and French. And this report will be formally launched at UEFA Conference for European National Coaches in Warsaw in September.
