Prandelli Delight Lucky Win of Penalty Shoot-out
Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli expressed his satisfaction to the 4-2 "lottery" of penalties victory against England. As for the 4-2 result, he said that he had never felt over strained. At the end of match Italy President Giorgio Napolitano called to congratulate. Later, Cesare Prandelli told media that he just want to go to bed. England coach Roy Hodgson was sorry for Three Lions leave.
Roy Hodgson, England Coach
We've tried our utmost. In fact, some players were suffering some physical troubles, Scott Parker with his Achilles and Steven Gerrard with cramp. Whether we had enough strength to go through is still a question. But there was no question of playing for penalties.
Our defense is very definitely stable and outstanding, especially in the second half. Unfortunately we hadn't held the chance in the shoot-out. Penalty has become a nightmare to English football. When doing training, we are not annoyed by the tense surroundings. Andrea Pirlo could score in with the most sober way, and we were obviously having such psychologically mentality.
Both teams created chances. And I thought Italy played much better while in a long period it was an interesting tactical match. Even thought their good ball control, they could not truly break our defense. We had opportunity indeed to win this match, so we do not need to apologize.
Attending press conferences were not easy all the way, particularly after a failure. The penalty shoot-out, we had done all what we could in order to keep staying at here and we strived to reward our fans by practical action. We had tried our best, but for the shoot-out we might not gained the same fruit as before. We go away unbeaten in normal time; but we go home because we can't win on penalties.
Cesare Prandelli, Italy coach
I didn't feel surprise to tonight. I knew that we could handle this game. What I worried was that we left to much counter space for opponent. In fact we could be much cleverer. We were tried to play in our style and attempted to attract England so that strike them quickly. If we could score in 90th minute it would be a more wonderful match.
Penalty shoot-out was a gamble but we thought we deserved to win finally. [Riccardo] Montolivo missed his penalty though, he still was one of the best players tonight after all. My son and I were watching the penalty shoot-out and I told him he need to delight because no ticket problem annoying him. When Andrea Pirlo stepped up I was very calm – he's a star and knew what he needed to do; and he did it.
80% success of penalty shoot-out should be attributed to luck. Some players could withstand pressure and some will be calm in such a tense atmosphere, while the most crucial depending on good luck.
President Napolitano congratulated us after match. We were very pleased. Subsequently we are going to prepare the next match against Germany who had two more days' rest period than us. If we take the same way, holding the same victory desire, I believe we are capable with strong competitiveness.
Germany and Spain are great favorite teams. We need everyone maintain health and fresh. Germany are a great side, they did big adjustment when beating with Greece, but it made no difference anyway. To be frank, the match today consumed too much time, we want our players to get best rest and adjustment. And we just want to go home and get to bed.
